Castello di Riomaggiore
The medieval Castello di Riomaggiore rises above the village, with surviving defensive walls and a viewpoint over the houses and coast. Its hill position changes the village view.
Why go
Climb toward Riomaggiore’s castle to see the village from above rather than only from its narrow lower lanes. The surviving walls and semicircular towers show how the settlement defended this stretch of coast. From the upper position, the tiered houses and sea line make more sense as parts of one steeply built village.
