Cologne Ring

The Kölner Ringe trace a long arc around the western and northern edge of Cologne's old town. A chosen segment reveals the former wall line more clearly than an end-to-end walk.

Cologne Ring

Why go

The boulevard follows the line where much of Cologne's medieval fortification once stood, separating Altstadt from the later Neustadt. Hahnentorburg at Rudolfplatz, Ulrepforte by Sachsenring and Eigelsteintorburg near Ebertplatz make that history visible at widely spaced points. Friesenplatz offers another recognizable section of the arc.

What to look for

  • Hahnentorburg at Rudolfplatz marks the former wall line.
  • Ulrepforte survives beside Sachsenring.
  • The Ring continues through Friesenplatz toward the northern gate near Ebertplatz.

Useful to know

  • Choose one Ring segment with a gate or square that interests you; the full arc is long.
  • Use the old town on one side and Neustadt on the other to orient yourself.
