The full story
The Gothic Cathedral is Cologne's defining landmark and a substantial interior visit. Its soaring nave, choir and major medieval artworks reward more attention than a quick look from the station square.
The building gives Cologne's medieval history a striking physical scale: high Gothic vaults lead toward the choir and the Shrine of the Three Kings. The Gero Cross adds an earlier, more intimate work within the same church. Exterior views are worthwhile too, but the interior, tower and Treasury are distinct parts of a visit.
- Look up through the nave to the high Gothic vaults and their supporting structure.
- The Shrine of the Three Kings stands behind the high altar.
- The Gero Cross shows Christ with a bowed head and closed eyes.
Set aside time inside for both the shrine and Gero Cross rather than treating the Cathedral as a photo stop.
Check the Cathedral's official visitor information before setting out; services can affect sightseeing access.
Decide separately whether the tower or Treasury belongs in your visit.
