Eigelstein City Gate

The Eigelstein City Gate is a substantial surviving northern gatehouse from Cologne’s medieval wall, still anchoring the street scene around it.

Eigelstein City Gate

Why go

It turns the idea of a vanished defensive circuit into a recognisable building. Walking around its mass and openings gives a sense of where travellers once entered the city, making it a useful northern counterpart to the surviving gate at Chlodwigplatz.

What to look for

  • The gatehouse preserves a prominent part of the medieval fortification system.
  • Its scale is easier to grasp by walking around both sides.

Useful to know

  • Approach along the street to experience it first as a threshold.
  • Compare it with Severins City Gate if following the former wall across Cologne.
