Church of St Ursula
St Ursula links a Roman burial ground with Cologne's medieval cult of the saint. Visit for the basilica and its layered story; the bone-lined Golden Chamber is a separate visit component.
The church stands over an ancient cemetery associated with the legend of Ursula and her companions. That link between burial place, relics and a growing medieval story makes the building more revealing than its exterior alone suggests. The Golden Chamber's reliquaries are central to the legend, but should never be assumed to be part of an ordinary basilica visit.
What to look for
The Romanesque basilica rises above a Roman cemetery.
The story of Ursula's companions shaped the church's unusual relic tradition.
