Gero Cross
This monumental tenth-century crucifix hangs in Cologne Cathedral's Kreuzkapelle. It is a focused stop for visitors who want to see how an early sculpture gives weight to Christ's suffering.
The oak figure makes a powerful contrast with the Cathedral's later Gothic setting. Christ's head drops and his eyes close, a departure from many earlier images that presented him upright and alert. The original figure and cross sit within a later Baroque surround, making the object's long history visible in one place.
What to look for
Christ's bowed head and closed eyes make the figure feel physically heavy.
The original figure and cross are framed by a surround added in 1683.
The crucifix is on the east wall of the Cathedral's Kreuzkapelle.
Useful to know
Look for the Kreuzkapelle during a Cathedral interior visit; the cross has no separate entrance.
