Why go
The river separates two useful views of the city: up close on the Old Town bank, the waterfront streets frame the Rhine; from Deutz, the cathedral rises behind them. The Deutz steps offer a place to stop and take in that whole composition. Keep the riverfront walk distinct from the Hohenzollern Bridge crossing, which gives a moving view above the water.
What to look for
- The Deutz steps face the cathedral and Old Town across the Rhine.
- The public promenade gives a close view of river traffic and the opposite bank.
Useful to know
- Use the Deutz bank for a broad skyline view; stay on the Old Town side for waterfront streets.
- Combine a riverfront pause with a bridge crossing if you want both fixed and changing perspectives.
