Shrine of the Three Kings
The gilded medieval reliquary behind Cologne Cathedral's high altar is the building's spiritual focal point. Go close enough to read its figures, not just its gold silhouette.
Made around 1190–1220 for relics associated with the Magi, the shrine helps explain why Cologne Cathedral became such an ambitious pilgrimage church. Its front depicts the Adoration of the Magi, while prophets line the lower sides. Those scenes turn an impressive object into a readable account of the relics it was built to house.
What to look for
The Adoration of the Magi appears on the shrine's front.
Prophet figures occupy the lower arcades along its sides.
Its position behind the high altar marks the shrine as the Cathedral's focal treasure.
