Great St Martin Church
Great St Martin's Romanesque crossing tower rises above Cologne's old town near the Rhine. Its exterior shapes the skyline, while the lower church adds a much older layer when accessible.
The tower gives the old town a distinctive silhouette beyond the Cathedral's spires. The church grew from a monastery on land once separated by Rhine channels, and Roman excavations below it reveal an earlier city. Its restored fabric also tells part of Cologne's story of wartime damage and rebuilding.
What to look for

Useful to know
Start with the exterior and check parish information before counting on an interior visit.
Combine it with a walk through the nearby old town rather than making a separate long detour.
