Kolumba
Kolumba places art galleries within Peter Zumthor’s building around the remains of St Kolumba, allowing archaeology, medieval fabric and later artworks to speak to one another.
The architecture is as important as the collection: the museum’s quiet rooms frame the old church remains without turning them into a conventional reconstruction. Take a slower route through the building to notice how light, materials and archaeological layers change the experience of each work.
What to look for
The museum building incorporates the ruins of St Kolumba.
Quiet galleries present art from different periods within the same architectural setting.
Useful to know
Begin with the archaeological layers before moving through the galleries.
Allow room for an unhurried visit; the building rewards attention to its spaces as well as its artworks.
