Old St Alban Memorial
The roofless remains of Old St Alban stand south of Cologne’s town hall, preserving a wartime church ruin and a memorial sculpture in the rebuilt old town.
The ruined walls convey the scale of wartime destruction more directly than a photograph or museum label. This is a short, reflective outdoor stop whose power comes from the contrast between the damaged church fabric and the busy streets around it.
What to look for
The surviving church walls remain open to the sky.
The memorial sculpture gives the ruin a human focus.
Useful to know
Approach from the town hall area and view the ruin from the public space around it.
Treat the site as a memorial rather than a building to enter.
