From the Cologne World / Areas

Innenstadt

Cologne's Innenstadt covers the old town, the nineteenth-century Neustadt and Deutz across the Rhine. Use its named quarters to plan a visit; the district is far larger than the Cathedral precinct.

Innenstadt

Why go

The district brings together Cologne Cathedral, Romanesque churches such as Great St Martin and St Gereon, and later landmarks such as KölnTurm at MediaPark. Crossing to Deutz changes the perspective on the historic core. Pick a quarter or a small group of anchors instead of treating all of Innenstadt as one walk.

What to look for

  • Altstadt-Nord and Altstadt-Süd contain the historic core around the Cathedral and town hall.
  • Neustadt-Nord and Neustadt-Süd extend beyond the old town's former wall line.
  • Deutz is the Innenstadt quarter on the Rhine's opposite bank.

Useful to know

  • Choose Altstadt for the Cathedral and older churches; make MediaPark a separate Neustadt-Nord focus.
  • Allow for a river crossing if your plans combine Deutz with the old town.
