Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces
Brühl's two Rococo palaces make a substantial excursion from Cologne: Augustusburg offers grand interiors, while the walk through the park to smaller Falkenlust adds a quieter second setting.
The sweeping staircase at Augustusburg is the architectural centrepiece. Beyond the formal garden, Falkenlust shows a different scale of court life as a hunting lodge. Seeing both explains why this UNESCO site is an ensemble rather than a single palace, but the park crossing makes it a longer outing than a quick building visit.
What to look for
Balthasar Neumann's grand staircase turns the Augustusburg interior into a dramatic sequence.
The formal parterre contrasts with the wooded park between the palaces.
Falkenlust is a smaller hunting lodge, roughly a half-hour walk from Augustusburg.
Useful to know
Start at Augustusburg and allow time for the park walk if Falkenlust is part of your plan.
Check the palace tour arrangements and the separate garden timetable before leaving Cologne.
