Forstbotanischer Garten Köln
This woodland botanical garden in Rodenkirchen trades central Cologne's monuments for tree collections, planted landscapes and the adjoining Friedenswald. It is best suited to an outdoor walk with room to linger.
Why go
The rhododendron ravine and varied native and introduced trees make the garden more than a generic patch of green. Its former military land was turned into planting, and the neighbouring Friedenswald extends the walk into a broader wooded setting. Come for a slower south Cologne outing, especially if you want to pair green space with Rodenkirchen's riverfront.
What to look for
The Rhododendronschlucht creates a distinct planted ravine.
Native and introduced trees give the paths changing textures and forms.
Friedenswald continues the landscape beyond the garden.
Useful to know
Leave enough time to walk into Friedenswald as well as the main garden.
Check the city's seasonal garden timetable before setting out, especially for a late visit.
