Old Fortress of Corfu
Cross the sea moat to explore the Venetian citadel on Corfu Town's eastern headland. Its walls, later British buildings and summit view reward a more substantial visit than a quick photograph.
Why go
The fortress makes Corfu's defensive history easy to read on the ground. The Venetians cut the Contrafossa channel to separate the headland from the town, then strengthened the bastions against Ottoman attack. Walk beyond the entrance to see how the peninsula, walls and harbour views worked together.
What to look for
The Contrafossa sea moat turns the fortress headland into an artificial island.
The Church of Saint George brings a British-era layer into the Venetian citadel.
The higher ground gives a broad view over Corfu Town and the water.
Useful to know
Treat the fortress as a walking visit with an ascent if you want the summit panorama.
Pair it with the nearby Spianada and Old Town streets to see the citadel in its urban setting.
