Why go
The three systems solve different problems. DART makes Howth an easy coastal excursion, intercity trains support trips such as Kilkenny, and Luas links central areas with rail stations and western districts. A map check prevents assuming they form one seamless metro.
The full story
Dublin’s rail network is a set of overlapping systems rather than a single underground grid. DART follows the coast and is the most useful line for a visitor heading to Howth or south along Dublin Bay. Commuter and intercity trains share major stations but continue much farther. Luas trams run on street and reserved track across two principal lines, helping with selected central and suburban journeys. Transfers may require a walk, and the best station depends on your destination rather than on which name sounds central. Check live service notices, platform information and the final departure before a day trip. Around the core, walking can beat a transfer; for the coast or another city, rail gives the clearest advantage. That distinction saves time.
