Grand Canal

Towpaths, locks and tree-lined water create a quieter east–west walking corridor south of central Dublin, especially around Portobello and Baggot Street.

Grand Canal

Why go

The canal offers a gentler view of Dublin than the central quays. A short section is enough to notice lock engineering, Georgian-era infrastructure and neighborhoods that grew around the water. It works best as connective walking, not as a single pinned attraction.

What to look for

  • Stone locks and bridges interrupting the calm water
  • Houseboats and mature trees along selected stretches

Useful to know

  • Pick one neighborhood section instead of following the whole canal
  • Paths can be exposed and slippery after rain
