O’Connell Bridge

This unusually wide Liffey crossing opens views along both quays and connects Dublin’s main north–south pedestrian axis in a few minutes.

O’Connell Bridge

Why go

The bridge is less a destination than a useful viewing platform. From its center, the river explains the city’s geography: O’Connell Street rises north, D’Olier Street angles south, and the quays frame layers of civic architecture. Cross slowly enough to notice the changing skyline.

What to look for

  • Long views east and west along the River Liffey
  • The bridge is almost as wide as it is long

Useful to know

  • Use pedestrian signals; traffic lanes make lingering awkward
  • Combine the crossing with O’Connell Street and Trinity College
