Why go
The Rundgang lets you see work by students and graduates within an academy closely tied to the city’s art history. It is a different proposition from a museum collection: exhibitions reflect current artistic practice, and public access depends on the announced event.
What to look for
- The academy building stands near the Altstadt.
- Winterrundgang and Sommerrundgang present students’ and graduates’ work.
The full story
The Kunstakademie’s role in Düsseldorf goes well beyond its façade. Its origins reach back to Lambert Krahe’s drawing school in the eighteenth century, and the institution became an important academy in the nineteenth. Later generations of artists associated with it include Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and several photographers whose work shaped contemporary art. That long lineage can make the building tempting to treat as a museum, but its public exhibitions have a different character. During the Winterrundgang and Sommerrundgang, students and graduates present work in the academy itself. The visitor sees an active school at a particular moment, with new work rather than a fixed historical collection. On other dates, the exterior can still connect an Altstadt arts walk to that history, while Kunsthalle or Kunstpalast may be better choices for an exhibition you can plan around.
Useful to know
- Check the academy’s Rundgang announcement before planning to go inside.
- Pair an exterior look with an Altstadt walk if no public exhibition is running.
