Architecture of the Ellis Island Main Building
The museum occupies the 1900 Main Building that replaced a wooden station lost to fire. Its restored spaces let visitors read the island's history through the building as well as the exhibits.

Look beyond the displays to the building that once organized the arrival process. Architects Edward Lippincott Tilton and William Alciphron Boring designed the replacement station, which opened in 1900. After immigration processing ended in 1954, the complex deteriorated; restoration brought the Main Building back into use as a museum in 1990.
Useful to know
Pair the Registry Room with the restoration exhibits to compare the building's original purpose and later preservation.
