From the Ellis Island World / Stories

From Immigration Station to Museum

Ellis Island’s museum exists because the former station was preserved and restored after its immigration role ended. The Main Building reopened to visitors decades after the final processing years.

From Immigration Station to Museum

Why go

A visit now combines original working spaces with later interpretation. Understanding the gap between the station’s 1954 closure and the museum’s 1990 opening helps explain why some parts were restored for visitors while other island buildings needed separate preservation work.

The full story

Ellis Island closed as an immigration station in 1954. In 1965 it became part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Public access was limited for a period, and a major restoration began in 1984. The Main Building reopened on September 10, 1990, as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Its restored halls made the former processing station itself a central part of the visit, rather than simply a container for displays. Later exhibitions broadened the museum’s account of immigration beyond the years of Ellis Island processing, and it became the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. The hospital and other south-side buildings followed a different preservation path. As you move through the Main Building, notice that the space tells two connected stories: how officials and immigrants used it, and how later generations chose to save and interpret it.
