Why go
Take the Governors Island ferry for a day that stays on one island. This route suits walkers interested in the former military landscape as well as open space near the harbor. Fort Jay and Castle Williams frame the defensive history; Colonel’s Row and Nolan Park show the residential side between them. The stops form a compact walking circuit, but current access to Fort Jay uses the West Sally Port, with stairs and uneven ground. Governors Island boats depart separately from the Statue and Ellis Island service, and Brooklyn sailings have seasonal limits. Check the current ferry timetable and the fort access details before traveling. This plan starts after arrival on Governors Island, so allow additional time for the ferry on either side.
