Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine
An unfinished façade conceals a Rococo interior, medieval remains and chapels that survived the fire of 1771, including the celebrated Brancacci fresco cycle.
Why go
The church makes a revealing companion to the separately managed Brancacci Chapel. Its plain exterior gives little warning of the rebuilt nave, Domenico Stagi’s illusionistic vault, the surviving sacristy and the Baroque Corsini Chapel with works by Foggini and Marcellini.
What to look for
The façade remains unfinished, as at several other Florentine churches.
Domenico Stagi’s painted vault uses architectural illusion above the nave.
The sacristy and Brancacci Chapel escaped the destructive fire of 1771.
Useful to know
Plan the church and Brancacci Chapel as separate visits; their entrances and visitor arrangements differ.
Inside the church, compare the rebuilt Rococo nave with the older surviving chapels.
Check access around services and religious holidays before setting out.
