Why go
The piazza lets you read several layers of Florence at once: the basilica’s marble front, Palazzo dell’Antella’s painted façade, Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori opposite, and Enrico Pazzi’s monument to Dante. Its broad open scale also explains why major public events gather here.
What to look for
- Santa Croce’s marble façade closes the eastern end of the square.
- Palazzo dell’Antella stretches along the south side with an early 17th-century painted façade.
- Enrico Pazzi’s marble Dante stands in front of the basilica.
Useful to know
- Walk the long sides before approaching the basilica to compare the square’s palace fronts.
- Combine the piazza with the Monumental Complex of Santa Croce; they are distinct outdoor and interior experiences.
- Check for event installations, which can temporarily change how much of the square is open.
