Why go
Walk it to understand a bridge that has functioned as a commercial street for centuries. The 1345 stone arches, irregular rear workshops and elevated Medici passage create sharply different architectural views from the busy roadway, riverbanks and neighboring bridges nearby.
What to look for
- Look upriver at the irregular rear extensions projecting over the Arno.
- At the center opening, frame Ponte Santa Trinita and the river between the shops.
- Trace the Vasari Corridor as it crosses above the bridge and bends around Torre dei Mannelli.
The full story
A bridge is documented at this narrow point of the Arno by 996. Floods repeatedly destroyed earlier crossings, and the present stone bridge followed the disaster of 1333, opening in 1345. Its shallow segmental arches carried not only travelers but a permanent commercial street. Butchers dominated the shops from the 15th century. In 1565 Cosimo I commissioned Giorgio Vasari to run an enclosed passage from the government center toward Palazzo Pitti, carrying court movement above the market. The corridor had to bend around Torre dei Mannelli when its owners refused alteration. In 1593 the Medici grand dukes removed the butchers, and goldsmiths took their place. Those trades still shape the bridge’s identity, but the best evidence of its unusual construction appears from outside: workshops added behind the original shops hang unevenly over the river. Seeing the roadway and river elevation in sequence reveals how infrastructure, commerce and dynastic power accumulated on the same crossing.
Useful to know
- Cross once at street level, then view the bridge from the riverbank or Ponte Santa Trinita to read its structure.
- Combine it with the Vasari Corridor story: Medici movement above reshaped the trades operating below.
