Why go
Seven popes lived in Avignon from 1309 to 1377, and the immense Palais des Papes still gives that chapter a physical scale. Pair it with the surviving ramparts and Pont Saint-Bénezet to see how the papal city related to its defences and the Rhône. The palace interior deserves its own visit if that history is your focus.
What to look for
- The Palais des Papes dominates the historic centre.
- Medieval ramparts still mark the city's edge.
- Pont Saint-Bénezet reaches into the Rhône from the old city.
Useful to know
- Begin around Place du Palais, then connect the palace, ramparts and bridge on foot.
- Plan palace entry separately from the open city walk; its admission does not cover Avignon as a whole.
