Fukuoka Before the City
Northern Kyushu’s coastal position made the Fukuoka region an early point of contact with the continent. The surviving archaeological story is best understood through local finds rather than a general account of Japanese tombs.
Why go
The region’s long history of exchange helps explain why later Dazaifu and Hakata became outward-facing centers. Kofun burial mounds belong to the wider archaeological landscape, but a visitor gets a more direct local thread from the King of Na gold seal at Fukuoka City Museum. Use that object to place the city’s early history in a concrete setting.
Useful to know
Use Fukuoka City Museum for a local archaeological anchor before reading broader accounts of northern Kyushu.
