Kushida Shrine is Hakata's guardian shrine and the spiritual centre of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa tradition. Its decorated festival displays and compact precinct make an easy heritage stop.

The shrine gives a clear starting point for understanding Hakata's festival culture. Look at the festival displays, then walk the small precinct before continuing to the old shopping streets nearby. It is a working place of worship, so leave space for worshippers and check access to any indoor display.
