How Hakata and Fukuoka Became One City
The modern city formed in 1889 from two neighboring centers: merchant and port town Hakata, and Fukuoka’s castle town. Their names still divide the map in useful ways.
Hakata Station keeps the older port name, while Fukuoka names the city that grew from the merger. Tenjin lies on the former Fukuoka side; old Hakata’s temples and merchant streets sit farther east. Understanding that distinction makes a cross-city visit more legible and explains why the two names appear together in everyday travel.
Useful to know
Use Hakata Station and Tenjin as the two orientation points when planning across the historic halves.
