Introducing Fukuoka
Fukuoka sits on Kyushu’s northern coast, facing Hakata Bay. Its old port identity and later role as a regional center help explain why the city feels outward-looking as well as distinctly Kyushu.
The city’s geography gives a useful key to a first visit: Hakata grew around trade and temples, while the Fukuoka side developed around the castle and now includes Tenjin. Look for that pairing in the station names, neighborhood streets and historic sites, then use the waterfront to see how the city still faces the wider region.
Useful to know
Start with Hakata and Tenjin to understand the two names that shaped the modern city.
