The Mongol Invasions of Hakata Bay
Hakata Bay was a target in the Mongol-led invasions of 1274 and 1281. Surviving sections of the coastal defense wall make this history tangible along the modern shoreline.
After the first attack, defenders built a stone barrier along Hakata Bay before the second invasion. The wall’s remains shift the story from distant military history to the coast in front of you. Storms played a part in both failed campaigns, but the shore defenses show how seriously the threat was taken on land.
Useful to know
Seek out a preserved wall section if this history is your reason for going; the full barrier no longer stands.
