German Timber-Frame Road
The German Timber-Frame Road connects historic towns from the Elbe region toward Lake Constance through seven regional routes. It is best used to compare local building styles in a few nearby towns.
Why go
Einbeck and Celle offer a northern pairing, while Wernigerode brings the Harz into the picture. In the south, Schiltach and Haslach lead toward the Black Forest. The changing patterns of exposed beams and town streets make this a route for slow walking, not continuous mileage.
Useful to know
Pick one of the seven regional sections before choosing towns; the full network runs for nearly 3,000 kilometres.
Walk the historic centres to compare facades rather than viewing the buildings only from the road.
