Why go
Knowing Abendbrot and Kaffee und Kuchen helps you recognize meals that a restaurant menu alone may not explain. Bread, cheese and cold cuts can make a complete evening meal, while an afternoon café stop may revolve around coffee and cake. The pattern is flexible, especially in cities.
The full story
A traditional breakfast can be built from bread rolls or sliced bread with cheese, cold cuts, jam or honey, often with eggs and coffee or tea. The older pattern placed the main cooked meal at lunch. Supper, called Abendessen or Abendbrot, could be simpler: bread with sausage, cheese and vegetables. These are cultural patterns, not instructions for when every German eats today. Many people take a smaller lunch while working and have a warm meal in the evening. Smaller breaks have their own names. Brotzeit or Vesper refers to a snack, while Kaffee und Kuchen pairs afternoon coffee with cake, often as a social occasion. The vocabulary is practical when planning a day: a bakery or café can suit a lighter meal, while a full cooked dinner is also entirely normal. Regional side dishes differ, from potatoes and dumplings to Spätzle in the southwest.
