East Frisian Islands

Seven inhabited islands line the North Sea off Lower Saxony, with beaches on one side and Wadden Sea mudflats on the other. Choose one island first; ferry timing shapes the trip.

East Frisian Islands

Why go

Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge form a chain, but each is a separate island stay or excursion. The broad mudflats between them and the mainland reveal the Wadden Sea's tidal character, while the seaward beaches give a very different view. Norderney has the chain's largest town; smaller islands offer a different scale of visit.

What to look for

  • Compare the open North Sea beach with the sheltered Wadden Sea mudflats.
  • See how the inhabited islands differ in settlement scale, from Norderney to smaller neighbours.
  • Notice the tidal landscape on the mainland-facing side of your island.

Useful to know

  • Choose an island and its mainland departure point before arranging the rest of your route.
  • Check the island's ferry timetable close to travel; some sailings depend on tides.
