Marienplatz
Munich's central square gathers the New Town Hall, Mariensäule and old pedestrian streets in one compact place. Come to orient yourself before exploring the nearby market and palace.
The ornate Town Hall facade gives the square its main backdrop, while the column and fountain recall earlier chapters of Munich's civic life. Streets radiate toward the Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt and Residenz, so a short stop helps make sense of the Old Town. The square stays useful even when you skip the Glockenspiel crowds.
