Why go
Choose this route when you want most of the day inside, particularly in wet or windy weather. STAM — Ghent City Museum gives the city’s history and scale before the walk into the Arts Quarter. Museum of Fine Arts Ghent and S.M.A.K. — Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art sit near each other but offer very different ways of looking at art, so allow unhurried time in both. Continue to Ghent University Museum (GUM) for a change of subject: its displays ask how knowledge is made. There are four substantial visits, with walking between them, and no assumed exhibition or timed programme. The full sequence works only on a day when all four museums are open; their regular closure days differ, so check each calendar before setting out.
