Why go

This walk suits a first visit and anyone who wants Ghent’s medieval landmarks in a clear sequence. Begin with a substantial visit to Gravensteen, then slow down beside the Graslei and Korenlei before taking in the bridge’s skyline. The short links through St Nicholas’ Church, Ghent Belfry and Ghent Town Hall show how trade, faith and civic power shaped the centre. Finish inside St Bavo's Cathedral if it is open. The cathedral’s separately ticketed Altarpiece visit can be added independently, but leave extra time for it; the main route already has a full set of stops.
