Ala Church
Ala combines medieval stone carving and wall paintings with the visible legacy of a destructive fire. It suits a visit focused on survival, repair and changing church interiors.
The building brings several periods together: an older nave, a later choir and unusual sculpture around the southern entrances. Inside, paintings range from ornamental animals to religious narratives. The limestone baptismal font survived the 1938 fire, giving the restored interior a tangible link to its medieval furnishings.
What to look for
The south-side stained-glass window by Oskar Brandtberg commemorates the 1938 fire.
Medieval paintings include a scene from the legend of Saint Martin.
Useful to know
Arrange or confirm entry before travelling specifically for Ala’s wall paintings and commemorative window.
Examine the southern portals as part of the exterior visit.
