Outdoor walks and façade observations. Interior admission is not included.

The full story

Walk beside Visby’s medieval defences to understand the shape of the town. A selected stretch offers towers, gates and open ground without requiring the full circuit.

The wall makes the relationship between the compact trading town and its surroundings easy to read. Comparing gates, towers and the surviving moat spaces reveals a different scale from the lanes inside. Treat this as a ground-level walk beside the defences; the recommendation does not imply access along the wall top.

  • Medieval gates and defensive towers
  • Open moat spaces outside the town
  • The changing outline of the walled town

Start near Söderport and choose a ground-level section beside the wall; the full circuit is a separate walk.

Akebäck ChurchPlaces

Architecture / Art

Akebäck Church

Akebäck rewards attention to small, unusual details within a largely Romanesque building. Acoustic pots, a puzzling carved figure and a relocated picture stone distinguish this church from its neighbours.

Explore
Ala ChurchPlaces

Church wall paintings / Architecture

Ala Church

Ala combines medieval stone carving and wall paintings with the visible legacy of a destructive fire. It suits a visit focused on survival, repair and changing church interiors.

Explore
AlmedalenPlaces

History

Almedalen

Almedalen offers a park pause beside Visby’s walls and the sea. Beneath its present role as green space and political gathering place lies the town’s medieval harbour.

Explore
Alskog ChurchPlaces

Carved portals and reliefs / Architecture

Alskog Church

Alskog pairs a compact thirteenth-century nave with a much larger Gothic choir. Carving, surviving glass and unusually well-travelled furnishings give the interior several distinct points of interest.

Explore
Alva ChurchPlaces

Architecture / Art

Alva Church

Alva’s broad, unfinished tower gives it a low, weighty silhouette. Inside, a large medieval crucifix and late medieval paintings provide a contrasting focus for a closer visit.

Explore
Anga ChurchPlaces

Architecture / Art

Anga Church

Anga preserves a compact Romanesque form and a richly painted interior. Its runic inscriptions make the people behind the medieval building unusually visible alongside its religious art.

Explore
Ardre ChurchPlaces

Church wall paintings / Architecture

Ardre Church

Ardre is a small church where medieval furnishings meet a deliberately medieval-looking restoration. The distinction matters: much of its richly decorated appearance was created around 1900.

Explore
Atlingbo ChurchPlaces

Architecture / History

Atlingbo Church

Atlingbo combines an unfinished tower with evidence of a medieval role as a place of refuge. Its old font and contrasting portals add detail to the compact building.

Explore
Barlingbo ChurchPlaces

Architecture / Art

Barlingbo Church

Barlingbo offers unusually detailed medieval carving, surviving painted glass and an exterior shaped by successive additions. The richly carved baptismal font is a particular reason to seek entry.

Explore
Björke ChurchPlaces

Architecture / History

Björke Church

Björke’s missing tower is part of its story: a blocked arch marks a plan never completed. Inside, early furnishings sit beneath a compact arrangement of medieval vaults.

Explore
Bro ChurchPlaces

Carved portals and reliefs / Church wall paintings

Bro Church

Bro brings together reused carved stones, a richly sculpted entrance and layers of wall painting. It rewards visitors who enjoy tracing how older material survives within a later building.

Explore
Bunge ChurchPlaces

Church wall paintings / Architecture

Bunge Church

Bunge brings together a fortress-like tower, a walled churchyard and richly painted Gothic interior. It rewards an interest in how worship and defence shared the same medieval building.
