Why go
The medieval Gutalagen named Atlingbo among Gotland’s three asylum churches, giving this parish church a wider significance than its size suggests. A cell in the unfinished tower contains a hagioscope, an opening for looking into the church. The building’s arrangement is therefore as interesting as its carved and furnished details.
What to look for
- Three medieval portals survive: two Gothic and one Romanesque.
- The twelfth-century baptismal font is probably the work of Master Byzantios.
- The choir and apse predate the later nave and tower base.
Useful to know
- Ask about admission to Atlingbo before travelling to see the tower cell and font.
- Compare the surviving portals outside to see the change from Romanesque to Gothic carving.
