Barlingbo Church
Barlingbo offers unusually detailed medieval carving, surviving painted glass and an exterior shaped by successive additions. The richly carved baptismal font is a particular reason to seek entry.
The church rewards comparing small objects with the architecture around them. Biblical figures, evangelists’ symbols and runes crowd the old font, while a large Gothic portal looks almost too big for its wall. Thickened masonry around that entrance makes the practical consequences of a later alteration visible.
What to look for
A rose window marks the western tower façade.
Medieval painted glass survives in the apse and south-side windows.
Fourteenth-century paintings in the apse depict six apostles.
Useful to know
Check interior admission with the parish if the carved font and painted glass are your priorities.
Look at the masonry around the largest Gothic portal when examining the exterior.
