Alskog Church
Alskog pairs a compact thirteenth-century nave with a much larger Gothic choir. Carving, surviving glass and unusually well-travelled furnishings give the interior several distinct points of interest.
The change in scale between the older body of the church and its eastern end suggests a rebuilding project that went only part of the way. Inside, a carved font retains traces of colour, and medieval stained glass depicts scenes from Jesus’ life. The contrast rewards looking closely rather than simply taking in the whole room.
What to look for
The south portal has carved capitals.
The sacrament cupboard has Annunciation paintings inside its doors.
Two embroidered alms bags were made in Constantinople in 1775.
Useful to know
Ask the parish about admission if you want to see the font, glass and other interior furnishings.
Compare the nave and choir from outside before looking at their different scale indoors.
