Alva Church
Alva’s broad, unfinished tower gives it a low, weighty silhouette. Inside, a large medieval crucifix and late medieval paintings provide a contrasting focus for a closer visit.
An interrupted building campaign is still visible in Alva’s shape: the tower never reached its intended height. The older choir keeps its rounded Romanesque apse, while the carved portals add detail at ground level. Together they make the exterior useful for understanding how an incomplete church could acquire a lasting character.
What to look for
A substantial thirteenth-century crucifix dominates the interior.
A partly surviving twelfth-century font is attributed to the carver Hegvald.
Late medieval wall paintings survive inside the church.
Useful to know
Check Alva’s admission arrangements with the parish before making a trip for the crucifix and paintings.
