Why go
The decoration spans a much longer period than the medieval building first suggests. Late-thirteenth-century apostles share the nave with later religious scenes, while painted blue draperies in the choir belong to the early nineteenth century. The surviving font and crucifix reach further back, to the church that preceded the Gothic nave.
What to look for
- Two richly carved southern portals retain fragments of their original paint.
- A choir niche preserves late-thirteenth-century paintings.
- The late-twelfth-century sandstone font carries a disputed sculptor attribution.
Useful to know
- Use the Gotland parish page when checking access; several Swedish churches share the Ekeby name.
- Look at the south portals before going inside to follow the shift from carved colour to painted walls.
