Why go
The building grew in stages from the late twelfth into the thirteenth century, yet its rounded apse and western tower form a remarkably consistent whole. The figures around the choir portal resist an easy explanation. Their uncertain meaning and authorship invite careful looking without needing a settled interpretation.
What to look for
- The choir portal has sculpted figures unlike the usual Gotlandic examples.
- Fourteenth-century wall-painting fragments were uncovered during the 1951–52 restoration.
- Only the foot survives from the Romanesque baptismal font.
Useful to know
- Begin with the rounded east end and carved choir portal; these explain the church’s appeal even before entry.
- Ask Fardhem-Garde parish about interior visiting arrangements.
