Fårö Church
Fårö Church combines a substantially rebuilt medieval church with stories of island seafaring and Ingmar Bergman’s grave. It offers a different emphasis from Gotland’s more intact medieval interiors.
Two memorial paintings recall seal hunters who survived after drifting away on winter ice. They give the church a direct connection with the risks of island life. Its bright, cross-shaped interior largely reflects nineteenth-century rebuilding, while the medieval font provides a quieter link with the building’s earlier form.
What to look for
The seal-hunter memorial paintings date from 1618 and 1767.
Local carpenter Magnus Möller made the pews and pulpit in 1761.
Ingmar Bergman’s grave is in the northwestern churchyard.
Useful to know
Treat the grave as part of an active churchyard visit.
For the memorial paintings, confirm interior access with the parish before travelling.
