Why go
The church preserves an unusually intimate early character, with small windows, narrow portals and a flat wooden ceiling. Around the western nave and tower arches, saints painted in a Russo-Byzantine style point towards artistic connections beyond Gotland. Their presence adds another dimension to the contrast between the building’s older body and later eastern end.
What to look for
- Four medieval gateways frame the churchyard.
- Carved stone benches survive from the early stone church.
- The twelfth-century baptismal font is attributed to Master Byzantios.
Useful to know
- Seek confirmation of entry before making Garde’s painted saints the focus of a visit.
- Compare the nave and choir from the churchyard to read the unfinished rebuilding in their different heights.
