Why go
The paintings bring a surprising range of subjects into the room, from imitation hanging fabrics to biblical scenes and fighting figures. Much was uncovered during restoration in the 1950s. Looking between those surfaces and the surviving medieval choir furniture gives a fuller sense of the church than its prominent outline alone.
What to look for
- A single column divides the nave beneath its vaults.
- A fourteenth-century choir bench and sacrament cupboard survive.
- The ruins of a separate medieval defensive tower stand near the church.
Useful to know
- Arrange admission through the parish office before travelling for Gothem’s paintings.
- Allow an exterior look at the defensive ruins as well as the church’s tall western tower.
