Why go
Animals, fighting men and mounted knights run across the Romanesque carving, with no single agreed interpretation of their meaning. Later portals add Christian scenes and grotesque faces. Comparing the two kinds of sculpture makes the exterior especially rewarding, even before considering the broad, columned interior and its medieval furnishings.
What to look for
- Three slender Gothic windows mark the straight eastern end of the choir.
- The carved baptismal font is a work of Master Sigraf.
- The Renaissance pulpit was originally made for Visby Cathedral.
Useful to know
- Start with the south façade to compare the reused Romanesque reliefs with the later Gothic portals.
- Verify interior admission with the parish if you want to include the font and pulpit.
