Why go
The building’s breadth is the reason to go: the large Romanesque nave meets an equally ambitious Gothic choir, yet the planned western tower never rose. Inside, the blocked tower arch frames a Last Judgement painting. Looking between the vaults and the carved column bases reveals both the scale of the project and its smaller, playful details.
What to look for
- A toad and a jester appear among the carved column bases.
- Five exterior portals include large sculpted Romanesque entrances.
- A large medieval crucifix hangs on the north wall.
Useful to know
- Confirm the parish’s current visiting arrangements before relying on interior access.
- Move from the whole vaulted space to the column bases; the small carvings are easy to overlook.
